Best Comfort Bridles for 2022
Bridles have certainly come a long way! Looking back at old pictures of horses – you can see the old riding tack of old was not a lot of fun for horses, at the very least it was uncomfortable. Thankfully, we have come a long way to produce some great bridles that properly cater for your horse’s needs and provide them with that extra bit of comfort.
Comfort bridles sometimes also referred to as ergonomic bridles or anatomical bridles offer a specialised design that ensures that the senses and nerves within the horse are relieved from pressure. This is a relatively new concept, allowing the horse to be much more comfortable and as a result happier as you ride.
How do they differ from the typical bridle? They tend to offer a more strategic design that is often curved around their face as opposed to ‘straight’ – particularly around their ears, cheeks and nose. They also tend to offer extra padding in key areas as well as certain cutouts around their face – ensuring a more practical and anatomical design to keep them as comfortable as possible.
So let’s get to it. Take a look at our top 5 selections and see whether it’s worth making the switch across from your standard bridle. Even if you are a bit unsure, it’s definitely worth testing it out to see if your horse reacts better to a more comfort-based bridle – and from that – you can make a more informed decision.
So which type of bridle should you choose? Let’s take a look:
1. Dy’on Collection Bridle With Anatomic Noseband
One of our most popular comfort bridles in the range featured in English Sedgewick leather with a delicate cream stitch detail – is the Dy’on Collection Bridle with Anatomic Noseband . Available in both Brown and Black, this is a great option for all ponies and horses for the ultimate comfort.
There is a lot to like with this bridle. The headpiece is wider than usual bridles, adding comfort and the noseband curved to relieve pressure behind the ears. We often forget that horses have many pressure points and nerves and this bridle basically spreads the usual pressures of the bridle over a larger surface area. As a result, making the bridle as comfortable as possible. If you have a horse that can be a head-shaker or easily irritated then an anatomical bridle is definitely worth a shot.
Another great feature adding to the comfort of this bridle is the 2mm of neoprene lining the noseband, poll and browband. This cannot be seen when on, it just appears slightly raised for the comfort element. A snug but comfortable fit, you will be in total control whilst your horse is happy too.
Featuring brass buckles for that traditional look, all the buckles are expertly created to not rub or cause irritation. The noseband buckle features a leather guard to protect this sensitive part of the horse and where a lot of the pressure will be.
All in all a really great option for any horse or pony of any age, with the main goal to create comfort for both the horse and rider, whilst looking great too!
2. Dy’on Double Noseband Bridle New English Collection
Another great Dy’on bridle (you can’t go wrong with this brand!). This one is particularly good for stronger horses. With the double noseband providing that extra bit of control, it works in a similar way to having cavesson and drop noseband.
The noseband has lateral straps which join the two parts of the noseband, which controls the opening of the mouth and crossing of the jaw, for a much more controlled and enjoyable ride. With the noseband adjustable, you can ensure your horse is as comfortable as possible.
This bridle is made from a Sedgewick leather, like the bridle above, but has self-coloured stitching for a more subtle look, with the double padded noseband attached, The cavesson part is fastened with a roller buckle on a protective padded leather tab, ensuring the utmost comfort for the horse, whilst providing control for the rider.
Including an anatomic headpiece, where they have shaped the bridle away from the horse’s ears to release the pressure behind this sensitive area.
All in all a really great option for a strong and pulling horse, this should provide you with some much-needed breaks! It’s worth bearing in mind that this bridle is FEI legal for showjumping and cross country, but not for dressage.
3. Dy’on Classic Wide Crank Noseband Bridle
There’s a reason it’s referred to as the “Classic” – and that’s mainly because this comfort bridle is often the ‘go to’ choice for those who are looking for the perfect comfort bridle but are a little unsure what option they need to go for.
Take a look at the picture above and you can see a horse sporting the Classic bridle, which’s manufactured from Buffalo leather that offers a particularly thin anatomic headpiece (ensuring it’s incredibly lightweight and comfortable for the horse). You might also notice the slightly raised padded browband too that’s supported throughout with the lined cream stitching and supporting steel buckles.
There are a few options to choose from – select either a Full Horse or Cob size as well as whether you want it in Black or Brown. In sum, this is an all-around favourite at Just Equine and an option we would certainly recommend if you are struggling to pick one.
